Thinking Like an Entrepreneur

There is nothing wrong with being an employee. Even if it is not the end goal, being an employee means that you can still apply yourself and be a valuable part of a team. Moreover, employees who are looking to move up the ladder could benefit from thinking like an entrepreneur.

But what does that entail? What could employees be doing to differentiate themselves, make themselves more valuable, and move up that ladder? Here is how to think like an entrepreneur.

Make Yourself Valuable

The best way to make yourself valuable is to create value for yourself. The best way to do that is to endear yourself to the organization through high effort and a “no excuses” attitude. Those with an entrepreneurial mindset know that there is more than just “putting in work.”

Those people find ways, big or small, to make themselves valuable to an organization. That value is the biggest key to thinking like an entrepreneur.

Take Ownership

There are plenty of employees out there who will pass the buck and refuse to take blame. Nothing is ever their fault. Those are also the employees who tend to lose the most responsibility. They are also relegated to nothingness within the organization or outright fired.

Take ownership of the situation. Even if it goes poorly, it will show that you are unafraid to acknowledge when things don’t work out. Picking yourself up and moving forward is the key to being an effective entrepreneur.

Sell Yourself

The thing to remember about creating value within an organization is that no one is going to step up and go to bat for you. The most successful entrepreneurs are constantly selling themselves and their ideas to those above them.

People in the company are always looking for the edge or the next great employee. The ones who think like entrepreneurs are the ones that are consistently selling their abilities and what they can offer to the company. Never stop selling your ideas, your goals, and yourself.

Helping Your Child Choose Their First Instrument

If your child has expressed interest in wanting to learn an instrument, it’s up to you to help them figure out what instrument is best for them to start out on. Helping your child choose an instrument is also a great way to bond with them over a shared interest of music. Learning how to play an instrument early on has many benefits, so rest assured this experience will be rewarding for both you and your child alike.

Consider Their Age

When brainstorming what kind of instrument you want to start your child on, consider their age first. Because of their size, a child may be most comfortable learning how to play an instrument such as the violin, which is small enough for them to hold comfortably.

A violin is also pretty easy to master thanks to the simple design. The piano is another recommended instrument for starters due to the fact that you can easily see the notes you’re playing, which is great for visual learners.

Ease of Progression

At a young age, children tend to want to see results right away. If they’re not good at something right away, they might abandon it all together. That’s why it’s important to start them on an instrument such as the piano, where learning a simple song takes just under four weeks to master.

Once your child has gained enough confidence, they’ll feel ready to move on to bigger and better things.

Put Their Wants First

The last thing you want to do is force your child into playing an instrument they do not want to play. If your child wants to start with a specific instrument, encourage them to do so and find ways to make it work. It might take a little bit of extra work on their part, but do not let them give up.

A professional may also be able to help you find an instrument that is suitable for their age and size, which may make things much easier.

How Entrepreneurs Can Help Others

While it is important as an entrepreneur to grow your business and attempt to have success, that is not the only goal. Really successful entrepreneurs work hard to help those around them and those within their community.

But how can entrepreneurs help others? Here are a few basic tips for giving back even when you are trying to grow your business.

Mentor Others

If you are running a business that has had some level of success, don’t be afraid to share that success. Look to other entrepreneurs who have just started out and share some of your experience with them in getting started.

They don’t have to be competitors but helping to mentor others within the world of entrepreneurs is a great way to give back and help others. Share your successes but don’t be afraid to share those failures, too. Everything helps in the learning experience.

Sponsor Nonprofit Organizations

There are plenty of organizations, many within a short proximity, that could use some sort of corporate sponsorship. They more often than not need some kind of financial assistance when it comes to hosting an event.

Sponsoring those nonprofit organizations provides awareness of said organization. Not only does that help the nonprofit to get their event off the ground successfully, but it doubles as quality PR for your business. That’s a win-win if there ever was one.

Donate to Charity

If you are looking for a simple yet effective way of helping out and giving back, donating is tried and true. Organizations need money to continue their efforts, particularly nonprofit organizations. Choose one that is near-and-dear to you and donate some of your money.

Even though it is not exactly the most hands-on approach out there, it is effective no less. Organizations will always need funding to continue their efforts and a simple donation can go a lot further than a good-faith gesture. Pick your favorite charity and donate to them on a regular basis if you can. That is a great way to help others.

The Basics of Becoming an Entrepreneur

The dream for many is to become their own boss, to be a successful entrepreneur. What is better than getting involved in a successful business at the start and riding it as high as it will go? For that reason, so many attempt to start their own business every year.

There is also a reason why so many fail in that first year. Being an entrepreneur is a lot harder than you may think. That is why it is important to have the basics down before you get started. Here are a few of the most important basics.

Business Plan

If you don’t have a strong business plan, you may as well not bother. Business plans outline everything from projected expenses and revenues to marketing strategies to specific goals throughout the first few years of the business.

Consider the business plan as being the road map for the future. It can’t be perfect because the future is unpredictable. But a good business plan can leave you in the best possible position to answer the questions of what is to come.

Know Your Audience

Another crucial aspect to starting a business is to know the audience for it. Having a great idea may seem like enough to get going, but there is so much more to it. What does the audience look like for that idea or product?

When you know what the audience is looking for, you can tailor your idea or product to fit their needs. That is what a truly successful business does from the jump.

Know What You Don’t Know

As much as some entrepreneurs project that they know everything, no one does. That means getting the right help for starters. It also means acknowledging the things that you don’t know and finding the support to fill in those answers.

Not knowing everything is okay. So is needing help. Far too many entrepreneurs think that they have to know it all or do it all and that is why they fail.

Eliminating Distractions While Working From Home

These days, working from home has become incredibly common due to the pandemic. As a result, many people may be having a difficult time adjusting to the change. To top it all off, it can be incredibly difficult to stay focused, especially if you have kids or a spouse at home who may also be working from home. Luckily, there are some ways to eliminate as many distractions as possible to make sure you stay on top of your workload.

Listen to Music

If you’ve got headphones, use them to your advantage. Put on a playlist that will not only help you focus, but will also drown out any background noise. If you’re tired of listening to the same songs over and over again, consider putting on a podcast or even an audio book.

Take Breaks

As much as you may want to get all your work done in one sitting, this will only result in you getting burnt out. Be sure to make a schedule for when you plan on working, being sure to add in some time for you to take breaks in between.

Make a Calendar

To stay on top of important meetings and dates, be sure to buy or make a calendar where you can jot down things like this. When you write things down, you’ll be able to remember them easier and seeing them often will keep these dates in the back of your mind while you work.

A calendar can also be a great way to plan out any goals you hope to meet that week.

Dress for Success

It can be tempting to sit around in your pajamas all day, but doing so will only cause you to get overly comfortable – to the point where you may be tempted to take an afternoon nap in the middle of a work day, thus sabotaging any plans to be productive for the day. Make sure to dress as you would if you were going into the office to help you get in the headspace to work.

Putting Together Your First Drill Chart

Drill charts are vital in making sure that the band rehearses material properly. However, they are challenging to put together. Writers need to combine music, formations, and all kinds of requests into one coherent drill chart using complicated software. This guide will help you prepare to write your first drill chart.

Gather Your Materials

Before you can start the drill writing process in earnest, you should have all the materials that you will need on hand so you don’t need to scramble for them later. Make sure that you have all instrumentation notations, scores, guard notes, and more.

Before you start writing, it’s also helpful to familiarize yourself with the software you will be using. Applications such as Pyware Professional, which many drill chart writers use, can be complicated to figure out at first.

Prepare Your Notes

Once your materials are all in one place, you need to make sure that they are formatted and annotated properly. Any audio files that you have, such as click tracks or recordings, should be converted to the proper format for the software program that you’re using.

In addition to preparing your audio files, you can prepare yourself for writing by familiarizing yourself with the score. Reading the score and making notes will help you generate ideas and break up the planned drill into more manageable sections.

Record Your Notes in a Production Sheet

Once you’ve organized your materials and generated some ideas, you can begin the actual process of writing a drill chart with some idea of what you are doing. You can write directly in software such as Pyware or create a production sheet using a spreadsheet program. The sheet will be easier to share with others.

Every drill chart writer has a different process, but there are a few crucial pieces of information that all charts need to include. Be sure to include counts, measures, and notes for each of the sections.

Writing a drill chart can seem overwhelming, especially if you’ve never done it before. These tips can help you organize your thoughts.

How to Effectively Organize Your Desk at Work

A disorganized work desk is a surefire way to cause unnecessary stress on yourself. You’re constantly struggling to find important documents, your drawers are overflowing, and the amount of food wrappers on your desk is overwhelming. If this sounds a lot like you, it may be time for you to organize your desk. Here’s how to do it effectively.

  1. Make Room Only for the Important Stuff

Aside from your computer, there isn’t much else that you may need to have on your desk. To test this theory, remove any items from your desk that aren’t necessary to get the job done and put them on the floor. Make sure to only pick up the things you need to work.

By the end of the day, take inventory of all the things still on the floor and try and find other homes for them that don’t include your desktop.

  1. Keep a Clear Space

As tempting as it may be to pile things onto your desk until you can’t see it anymore, try and leave a small space on your desk clear at all times. This can be useful when you need to write something down or sign important papers. No matter what happens throughout the week, make sure that area on your desk stays clear.

  1. Remove Clutter

Even if your desk is organized, there may still be too many things on it that are causing it to look cluttered. Go through everything on your desk and get rid of any old paperwork or notes that you no longer need. Keep personal items such as photographs either in a separate part of your office or in one designated area.

  1. Keep it Clean

Another important thing to consider is to make sure you’re keeping your desk clean. Keep sanitizing wipes at your desk and wipe down your computer, drawers, and anything else you may touch on a regular basis. This will keep your desk not just organized, but sanitary too.

The Best College Marching Bands

All college marching bands know how to put on a show. However, there are a few that are just a cut above the rest. The following college marching bands are guaranteed to provide an unforgettable performance during halftime and beyond.

Texas A&M Aggie Band

Texas is the home of many fantastic college marching bands, including the famous “Showband of the Southwest” at the University of Texas. However, Texas A&M’s Aggie Band somehow stands out from all the rest. Audiences are impressed by their precise formations and perfectly synchronized sound.

The Texas A&M Aggie Band is so in sync that it is almost hard to believe that the band has over four hundred members! It takes discipline and countless hours of practice per week to perfect the military-style routines that are this band’s specialty.

University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Band

If a band is good enough for the president, then it has to be worth seeing. The University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Band performs regularly at presidential inaugurations (they only missed the one in 2013). That is a long way to come for a band that started with only cornets.

The Pride of the Southland band is famous for its hypnotic routines that mimic kaleidoscopes. The hundreds of University of Tennessee marching band members march in elaborate circling routines, and they rarely get dizzy.

Ohio State University Marching Band

Thousands of people saw a viral video of a marching band creating a Michael Jackson formation — they even moonwalked across the field! That was the work of the Ohio State University Marching Band. The Ohio State University Marching Band is famous for its precise, elaborate drill formations.

The tradition of the animated drill formations dates back to the 1930s when Ohio State University created their distinctive routine animating the word “Ohio.” They still perform their old favorite but added new stunning formations.

These are just a few of the best marching bands in American universities. However, all marching bands put on an amazing show and are well worth a watch.

Integrating AI Into Your Business

AI is a rapidly developing technology, and it is being used in new products all the time. It will help you make your business more efficient and productive, and it provides you with all kinds of data so that you can improve your products, services, and customer service. Take a look at some ways that you can integrate AI into your business.

Start by Learning About AI

There is a lot of information online that can help you become familiar with what AI can do for you. You can also find online workshops and webinars to help you learn how it works. Look for Intro to AI courses and research as much as you have time for.

Determine How AI Can Help Your Business

Once you have a basic understanding of what AI can do, consider how you can add it into your business. Look at specific AI, including facial recognition or language processing, to see if it will help you. Make sure that there is financial value to your business for any AI you consider including. There are a lot of great products, but if it doesn’t improve your efficiency and your bottom line, you should find something that does. Start with one type of AI and get it set up. You shouldn’t overwhelm yourself by spreading yourself too thin.

Make Sure That You Have the Capability to Integrate it

You need to understand both the business aspect of your company and the tech aspects. You need to identify what your business needs to acquire to get any AI up and running and make sure that you update any tech you need before you get started. When your business is ready, you can bring in experts and start building and integrating. Create a pilot project, and the tech experts can teach you everything that you need to know to use your AI and keep it running.

Take Small Steps

Rather than integrating AI into all of your data, you should begin by using part of your data. Make sure that the AI is working for you and build over time. Start by solving one problem and move on from there. Make sure that it is working for you before you add more data in. Consider how much storage you need and make sure that you can expand it as you need to. Don’t try to replace your daily tasks with AI; focus on integrating them as part of your daily routine. AI will work better for you this way.

What Is Color Guard?

There are many different aspects to marching band that most people are not familiar with. Color guard has been a part of most marching band performances for decades, but many people do not know what it is. This lesser-known section of many marching bands provides an opportunity for creatives who cannot play an instrument to support the marching band.

What Is Color Guard?

Color guard is a section of the marching band that doesn’t play music. Instead, they enhance performances with visual elements. The color guard performs choreographed dance routines set to the music played by the band. Sometimes they use props such as rifles, sabers, and different kinds of flags.

Who Can Join the Color Guard?

Anyone can join a color guard if they are passionate about music and dance. Many color guard members start off as trained dancers. Depending on the size of the band and the color guard, there can be dozens of members interpreting the music with visual elements.

All members of the color guard need to have excellent hand-eye coordination. Many color guard routines consist of tossing flags and spinning props in the air. Props are weighted and easily affected by weather conditions such as wind or rain, so color guard members need to be very precise to catch their props and stick to a synchronized routine.

How Does Color Guard Compete?

Most color guards perform along a marching band to add a visual element during a performance. The color guard is particularly important during marching band competitions. A color guard’s performance improves the overall score of the band.

Many color guards perform independently during something called Winter Guard. Winter Guards are indoor competitions that take place during a marching band’s off-season, in winter or spring. The color guard performs their routines to a recording instead of with a live band. There is even an organization called Winter Guard International that organizes these competitions.

Color guards liven up marching band performances and add a unique cohort to the band. They can participate in tense competitions or just enjoy dancing in the fresh air.
